Apple Event March 8: What Was Announced?

A roundup of Apple’s ‘Peek Performance’ spring event

Apple events are rarely a dull affair, and this year’s spring event ‘Peek Performance, is no exception. Apple have unveiled quite a few new devices, and even an all-new product—Mac Studio, which replaces the Mac Mini.

Of course, it was widely reported and generally considered a shoe-in that Apple would use the March event to release the new iPhone SE, and Apple have lived up to that expectation. Now featuring the same the A15 bionic chip that’s in the iPhone 13 lineup, the iPhone SE 3 adds 5G connectivity, camera improvements, and a front and back ceramic shield.

Other products to be launched include the iPad Air 5, Apple Studio Display, and an M1 Ultra chip, as well as a new color offering for the iPhone 13 Pro. Read on below for more details of the releases announced by Apple, plus a couple of Kovol’s very own.

iPhone SE

According to Apple, the dazzling new iPhone SE features exceptional performance capabilities at an ‘incredible price’. Apple further tell us that its impressive upgrades, such as integrating the phone with Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, along with iOS 15, delivers a seamless user experience. The A15 chip powers advanced camera capabilities and makes nearly every experience better, from photo editing to power-intensive operations like gaming and augmented reality. This is in addition to 5G connectivity, longer battery life, and improved durability thanks to a ceramic shield. However, one reported drawback, as noted by Tom’s Guide is that while camera improvements have been made overall, the new iPhone SE lacks a night mode in photography, which may surprise a few, and may make taking photos in low light that bit trickier.

The new iPhone SE will cost $429 and will be available for pre-order this Friday, March 11, with availability beginning Friday, March 18.

iPad Air 5

Apple tell us this is their most versatile iPad ever, and features the M1 chip (same as newer Macs and iPad Pro), ultra-fast 5G capabilities, and a new front camera. The new upgrades deliver a massive leap in performance. The latest iPad Air is being launched in a new array of colors, and features the new 12MP front camera with Center Stage for an enhanced video experience that automatically pans to keep users in view as they move around. When others join in, the camera detects them too. Apple’s latest iPad features a USB-C port with up to 2x faster transfer speeds, and blazing-fast 5G on cellular models. Advanced cameras and compatibility with the latest accessories enable users, including content creators, gamers, and students, to push the boundaries of creativity, productivity, and self expression.

The new iPad Air is available in 64GB and 256GB configurations and will be in stores beginning Friday, March 18, prices starting from $599.

Mac Studio

The all-new Mac Studio is a standout release from this Apple spring event. You can think of it as a replacement for the Mac Mini, but with huge leaps in performance. It’s available with either the M1 Max chip or the M1 Ultra chip, and offers up to 3.8x the power of the 27-inch iMac, which Apple have quietly retired. Apple have described their new Mac desktop as:

“Designed to give users everything they need to build the studio of their dreams.
A breakthrough in personal computing.”

Mac Studio has a starting price of $1,999 and goes all the way up to $3,999 for the version with the M1 Ultra chip, which Apple have also unveiled at this event. (See below)

In addition, Apple have launched the all-new Studio Display to accompany Mac Studio. This 27-inch panel features 5K retina resolution with 600 nits of brightness, a 12MP camera, plus a powerful speaker system. The stunning all-aluminum design has narrow borders and a slim profile. It sits on a stand that allows for a 30-degree tilt, with two other stands available for greater versatility in the work space. The first allows for height adjustment in addition to angle adjustment, and the other is a VESA mount adapter that allows Studio Display to be turned 90° for either portrait or landscape orientation .

Apple M1 Ultra Chip

This new super chip, according to Apple, is the world’s most powerful chip for a personal computer, and the M1 Ultra is available in the all-new Mac Studio if you go for the eye-watering maxed-out version, which is just shy of $4000. It is loaded with a 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, and 32-core Neural Engine. The new system on a chip (SoC) consists of 114 billion transistors, the most ever in a personal computer chip, which allows it to offer unprecedented levels of performance and breathtaking computing abilities.

To put into context to power of Apple’s latest chip, its 64-core GPU is 8x the size of the M1 chip. This delivers faster performance for the most graphic-intensive needs, such as 3D rendering.

iPhone 13 Pro - Alpine Green

In addition to Apple’s other product launches on March 8, the iPhone 13 Pro gets a refreshing new color in Alpine Green, complete with color matching aluminum edges. This new color variant of the iPhone 13 Pro is available from March 18.

So that was a rundown of all the major takeaways from Apple’s latest event. If you haven’t already seen it, the entire March 8 Apple Event ‘Peek Performance’ can be viewed here on Apple’s website.

Let us know your take on Apple’s latest event? Will you be rushing out to buy any of the latest releases, or will you wait until the Fall event later in the year when it is expected Apple will showcase the iPhone 14? It can be also assumed that because there was no MacBook update at the March 8 event, we will likely see that at the next Apple event, with MacBook Air possibly due a refresh, and the much anticipated M2-powered MacBook Pros released to the world.
