Needing More Power

The rapid evolvement and capabilities of modern mobile devices now advances at unbound speeds, and with these increases in performance and functionality comes an increase in power consumption. Your device’s battery is now hungrier than ever for more fuel - Something we know a lot about at Kovol, where we’re designing new ways that fast charging technology can work for you.

Long gone are the days of the standard 1 amp USB charger - fine for the devices of old. Now we have a huge plethora of different charging options which all cater to charging modern devices rapidly.

It sounds simple doesn’t it - just add more power and the device will charge quicker. Well, it’s a bit more complicated than that, but in short, heat is the enemy of electrical components. It slowly destroys them in a process called ‘thermal rotting’. The faster you charge a battery, the more heat is produced.. you see where it’s going. Needless to say, safety also plays a part here, as devices need to be charged safely without risking fire or explosion.

The boundaries of modern fast charging technology lie here - getting the fastest and most efficient charging speeds without degrading batteries or compromising safety.

Power Delivery (PD), Quick Charge (QC) and Programmable Power Supply (PPS)

Industry standards are helped set by the USB Implementers Forum (an organization that supports the advancement of USB technology). Protocols such as Power Delivery (PD) were introduced by the USB Implementers Forum to allow faster charging over USB cable.

PD is a standard that allows for higher amounts of power to be delivered to a device for super-fast charging. It’s capable of delivering variable voltage up to 20V and a 100W max. power output. Compatible devices implement a flexible power management system that allows the device to draw the maximum amount of power it can handle.

Another of the most common fast charging protocols is Quick Charge (QC). Quick Charge provides rapid charging by increasing the power output thanks to an increase in current (amps), and the latest QC 5 standard - developed by Qualcomm -  is capable of delivering charging speeds that will recharge a smartphone battery to 50% in just 5 minutes!

PPS is an advanced charging technology that has the capabilities to vary the current and voltage in real-time based on the device’s demand and charging status. Basically, a device’s battery will accept different amounts of current based on its charge level. A battery that is low will accept more current than a battery that is say, at 80%. That is why you may notice your phone charges at a slower rate when it is getting almost full.

GaN - What is it?

Whereas PD and QC are types of charging, GaN is used to describe a type of charger. If you’ve browsed through the latest fast chargers online, you’ve probably come across this acronym. GaN is short for gallium nitride and is a material that is starting to be used to manufacture semiconductors. It was first used back in the 1990s for LEDs. The benefits of GaN chargers are that they are physically smaller than traditional chargers because they rely on fewer components to get the job done. As there are fewer components, current transfer is more efficient and less energy is lost through heat.

Although typically not as widespread as other chargers, more and more manufacturers are now making GaN chargers, and as gallium nitride slowly takes over from silicone as the main component of semiconductors, expect this type of charge to become the norm in the future.

So, with that said.. Where can you buy a GaN charger?

Take a look below at two awesome charging options from Kovol. The first one being a GaN charger with a whopping 120W of power that’ll get your devices fueled to maximum in no time!

iPhone Users Will Need a Charger

From the iPhone 12 onwards, Apple announced they will no longer provide a charging adaptor with the phone. Thus, it will be important for future iPhone owners to get a charger that is specifically designed for use with the iPhone. The Kovol Sprint 65W 4-Port Desktop Charger is fully compatible and can charge an iPhone 12 from 0% to 100% in just 1.8 hours.*

In Summary

The rapid pace at which technology is evolving means smartphones have become incredibly powerful, feature-packed tools that are more power-hungry than ever. A giant leap in battery technology aside, ensuring our devices remain with enough power to see out the entire day is sometimes challenging. This is why having a capable charger that can fuel a device at the fastest speeds possible is necessary, and is what has spurred an evolution in the advancement of smartphone and portable device charging options.

Buying a brand new smartphone or tablet is like an investment, and the charging aspect shouldn’t be overlooked. In reality, the cost of a charger from a dedicated manufacturer is insignificant to the cost of purchasing a device, yet can offer significant charging advantages over stock charging options, as well as allowing you to charge multiple devices at once.
